Quantum of Solace is the Best Bond Film Ever? Yes & No…

In Movies on November 21, 2008 at 5:13 pm

So I recently went to see Quantum of Solace. Being a massive James Bond fan, the new direction they are going with the franchise in general is a great one. Casino Royale was amazing, it was character driven, action packed, and Martin Campbell did a great job. So is Quantum of Solace better than Casino Royale?

Yes, in the sense that it delivered exactly what I expected, great, gritty action and a sense of closer from the events of Casino Royale. Seeing that this film picks up shortly after the second, you could technically pop in CR, watch that and then pop in QoS and sort of finish it off. I disagree with the reviews it was given in a few respects. First off, I do think that there is more character driven moments in the movie than others say. In this film, we are following a hurt, angry Bond.

Vesper is dead, and he doesn’t care what he does, or who he kills to avenge her death. So as the movie progresses, and James Bond literally kills everyone, this is a combination of his anger and his lack of discretion. Remember, he is still a rather fresh Double-0, and still a bit brash and inexperienced. It’s these events that mold Bond, and the clay is still wet.

Second, the action is superb. Some of the moments had me on the edge of my seat, but still kept true to the tone of Casino Royale. The fight scenes were great, very reminiscent of the Connery Bond, but with a brutal twist. Daniel Craig has this unique, brawling style, it’s a ruthless, violent fighting style that contributes well to the Bond he is trying to play. He is not afraid to throw you around, pick up his gun and shoot you.

This Bond doesn’t care how he kills you as long as your dead. One moment that is particularly poignant is when Bond kills the man in the apartment. He stabs him in the leg and literally waits, holding the man’s wrist until his pulse slowly fades away.  THAT right there is the tone of this Bond. Determined, angry, ruthless, and out for revenge.

On the other hand, being an old school Bond fan, I had a few gripes with the film. Mainly it was the score and the title song. Another Way To Die is a strange song. It definitely shows that after Amy Winehouse jumped ship (she found some crack in the water) the producers and David Arnold had to scramble. Alicia Keyes and Jack White are an odd combination, and the song has sort of an odd sound. But over all, my biggest issue was David Arnold’s score itself. Seriously, not one time where they used the famous James Bond theme? Not even at the end? David Arnold should cut back on the loud trumpeting and throw in some of the theme…so I don’t forget it’s a James Bond movie.

Another thing is that you can tell that the script was rushed. It seems as though Bond runs out looking for revenge, stumbles upon Dominic Green (a great performance by Mattheiu Almaric), fixes that, and remembers what he has to do at the end. Despite that it’s not a terrible script at all, it just feels rushed. Then again the movie was shorter than normal, but in no way is that a problem. I am just greedy, and want to soak up the experience for as long as I can.

In the end, is Quantum of Solace the best Bond movie yet? Not necessarily. In my opinion, Casino Royale holds that title very firmly. However, QoS is not too far off. It has everything a Bond movie needs, satisfied my high expectations, and did exactly what it had to do, carry the story forth for the third, final movie in the story line. Any negative reviews it is receiving are very undeserved. Go watch it, and I promise you’ll feel the same way.

WTF does Bangkok Dangerous Mean?

In Movies on September 3, 2008 at 9:32 am

Does anyone know what the hell Bangkok Dangerous means? Seriously this makes no sense. Is it a special type of dangerous that, idk, only people from Bangkok posses? I understand this is going to be an over the top action flick, but come on, the title makes my nose bleed. You start to think about it and soon you begin to think of things that may or may not be Bangkok Dangerous. It’s frightening…

SPOILER ALERT: So I finally saw Tropic Thunder…

In Movies on August 18, 2008 at 8:23 pm

It was REALLY funny. I think it goes without saying that Robert Downey Jr. is the highlight of the movie (as he frequently is in most movies he is in) but the surprising thing is that the second most enjoyable roll is…

SPOILER ALERT
Tom Cruise as the head of the studio financing the movie. Honestly, I have forgiven all that scientology craziness cause he was so friggin’ entertaining in this movie. But all in all, the scenes where Stiller was “Simple Jack” were a bit much. However in the context of the film they were funny. Especially as Downey Jr.’s character explained to him that he can’t go “full retard” and expect to win an Oscar. Definitely a great scene. All in all it was really funny, and by far one of my favorite war movies haha. Peace Out!

Ok, Ok, Everyone Calm Down About Tropic Thunder.

Ever since they announced the possibility of this movie I have been whole-heartily psyched. I am a fan of more or less everyone in this movie and to say that I want to see it badly is a severe understatement. Robert Downey Jr. as a Australian method actor who surgically changes his skin color for a movie should be a most entertaining sight. But after the film’s release today, a lot of people are not pleased. Apparently one of the sub-plots of the movie is that Ben Stiller’s character, a type casted action star looking to be taken seriously, takes a role in the movie “Simple Jack” about a boy who is menta….no wait that’s not the politically correct term this week. Ah who is cognitively disabled (had to Google that). And apparently he is called the r-word (retard) for most of the movie. Honestly I am not a big fan of the word either, I try not to use it, but it is central the vocabulary of our youth (blog coming soon) and has become a fire that must burn itself out. But people bashing Paramount and Ben Stiller urging them to re-cut the movie is absurd. Look I admire and completely support the fact that the Special Olympics and Disability Rights Coalition among others are proudly protesting this movie. It’s their right. But at the same time it’s Ben Stiller’s right, it’s Paramount’s right to say what they want as well. The movie studios knew very well what this movie was about, that’s why it has a ‘R’ rating. This movie is intended for adults, who unlike children, can interpret the joke within the context of the movie and not as a personal attack against people who are disabled. What people fail to see is that freedom of speech goes both ways. If something offends you, you have the right to say you are offended and state why it is offensive. But you don’t have the right to force them to change it. If you don’t agree with the movie, don’t watch it. There have been plenty of things I have found offensive in my life and I just didn’t watch it. People in America these days are so overly sensitive to every little thing. Every has to walk on egg shells because people don’t have a sense of humor anymore. You know what? A little controversy every now and then won’t kill you. Anyway, just my two cents. I am going to try to get to the movie theater tomorrow and see what all the fuss is about. Peace Out till then.

Wow, George Lucas listens to fans now? When did this happen?

In Movies on August 8, 2008 at 1:00 pm

Beware, this is going to get nerdy, but it must be said.

George Lucas is renowned for screwing things up. Thats why the best Star Wars movie is the one he didn’t direct, and thats why Episodes 1, 2, & 3 were just ridiculous. So when I originally heard there was going to be an Indiana Jones 4, I was a bit cautious with my enthusiasm. But I said “Hey, Speilberg’s doing it…at least he is around to keep things real.” And he did for a while. I heard all the things I wanted to hear. Then they cast Shia LeBouf and I was like “Hmm not my choice but…*sigh* ok I’ll have to live with it.” But then George Lucas starts talking about how he wants to continue the franchise with LeBouf and how Indy will have more of a “Sean Connery” role…more secondary. After realizing that Lucas wasn’t joking,

Nerds everywhere rebeled.

Why? Indiana Jones is INDIANA JONES. Not “Mutt Williams and the search for the All Spark” or some nonsense like that. Like I said, nerds everywhere rebeled. “Madness!” they cried. The Mutt Williams character is so lame. We would have Indiana Jones movies where most of the dialogue was ” No no no no no no, no no wait!” Not cool. George Lucas probably finished reading all the public outcry and was quoted as saying this for an interview with MTV

“Indiana Jones is Indiana Jones. Harrison Ford IS Indiana Jones,” Lucas said,
dismissively adding about a character he helped create that, “If it was Mutt
Williams it would be ‘Mutt Williams and the Search for Elvis’ or something.”

I think after the first Indiana Jones, those movies, that story, doesn’t belong to Lucas anymore. It belongs to us, the people who love and watch them religiously. I respect Lucas for the vision (and for mad editing skills) but not for his continous need to mess stuff up. I hope he notices that listening to the fan base gets you a lot farther than doing it on your own. He needs to take a page from Jon Favreau. The man sat down researched everything, created a My Space group and asked the fans “Ok what do you want to see in Iron Man.” In the end you are making it for us, so our opinions might help you make the movie the best it can be. Peace Out.

Christian Bale’s Bat-Voice

In Movies on July 27, 2008 at 4:07 pm
I freaking loved The Dark Knight. To me there is really nothing wrong with it at all…it’s perfect. This is my Titanic. But Christian Bale’s raspy bat-voice is just out of control. It was tolerable in Batman Begins, but now is has grown up, and become a beast that can not be understood. Forgive me Mr. Bale, you are still the man. Though I may not agree with some of the things you do, you made The Dark Knight…so yeah go ahead and do whatever else it is that you want. In the mean time check out my good friend Raul’s YouTube video above about this very subject. Leave him a nice review too, I want him to beat the Chocolate Rain dude (or girl, I am not quite sure still).

The Dark Knight

In Movies on July 24, 2008 at 2:55 pm

My goodness, what a masterpiece. I am going to keep this brief because there really isn’t much I can say that hasn’t already been said. This film was…just epic. It earned every penny of that $180 million. This movie is proof that just because the main character is wearing a costume doesn’t mean it can’t be just an epic drama. It’s also a sad reminder that Heath Ledger dies way before his time. This movie…is just awesome. I am, I don’t know, overjoyed by how great this movie is. It’s a strange sensation.

Trade

In Movies on July 9, 2008 at 12:15 pm

I just saw this film last night. After the depression wore off I realized what a powerful film it is. Not to give too much away, it deals with human sex trafficking in Mexico City and people who’s lives are ruined by it. Some scenes in the movie won’t be leaving your mind for a while, but it was very well done. The sad reality of it all is that this movie is based in reality. Thousands of young women and kids fall victim to this every year. It’s a reminder of how cruel people can be, and how this world can be a dangerous, tragic place. Kevin Kline is as always excellent in the film, and the kid who was the main character wasn’t as annoying as I thought he was going to be. Cinematography was great too, a lot of impressive shots tell the story really well. Anyway, watch this movie on the day your are strongest emotionally. It will be a movie that won’t leave you for a while.

Quantum of Solace Teaser Trailer

In Movies on July 1, 2008 at 1:09 am

Anyway it’s a good week this week. They released the teaser trailer for Quantum of Solace. I am a big James Bond fan so it’s nice to be excited for the franchise again. Casino Royale was awesome, so I have been anticipating this for a while. The trailer looks good. Anytime James Bond goes rogue and enacts his revenge it always very entertaining. Anyway, watch it here.

Sydney Pollack (1934-2008)

In Life on May 27, 2008 at 2:52 am

Just got an MSNBC Text Alert that Sydney Pollack died today after a long fight with cancer. You can read the story here. He was a really great actor and an amazing director. He directed great films like “Out of Africa” and “Tootsie”. Definitely check those out to get a sense of what he contributed to cinema.

Quick reminder…

Don’t take a nap at like 2 in the afternoon, cause then you can’t sleep and you end up watching Broken Arrow on Blu Ray. I used to love this movie when I was a kid, but not ehh…not so much. I guess you develop a better taste for things. Then again Broken Arrow was one of those movies you can just sit back and watch. If you start to think about the parts that don’t make sense, you’ll miss the moments that…well ok the entire movie basically makes no sense.
